The Network Security Red Team at Colorado State offers students an opportunity to experiment with network security theory and practice.

Currently the lab has a test network that includes a machine with common network security tools and also hosts a number of vulnerable boxes. You are not expected to be an expert on security and a number of wiki pages will help guide you through some excersises. This network is not accessible from the Internet, but interested students can see Dr. Massey or Dr. Papadopoulos for information on how to access the network and the Wiki pages. Introduction to Security Testing (requires approval, see Dr. Massey or Dr. Papadopoulos)

3rd Annual CANVAS

In Spring 2007, we will host a network penetration test that includes students from Colorado State University, the US Air Force Academy, and other Colorado Front Range Universities. The event is tentatively scheduled for April 2008. In our current plan is to setup a home mortgage company network with a mix of simple and complex vulnerabilities. Teams of students will then assess the company security. Teams are expected to explore privacy, financial security, and network security issues. At the end of the day long excersice, each team submits a written assessment that is delivered to "CEO" and "CTO" of our company. Winning teams are awarded prizes.

The first event was hosted by Colorado State in April 2006. In April 2007, the US Air Force Academy hosted over 70 students who assessed the security of a voting machine company. The event returns to Colorado State in April 2008. We are seeking both students interested in participating and students interested in helping design the event. Attend the Network Security Group meeting 3-4pm on Wednesday for more information or contact Dr. Massey.
